THE CROSS RIVER STATE MERIT AWARD BILL, 2019 SCALES 2ND READING
The Cross River State Merit Award Bill, 2019 has passed through second reading in the House of Assembly. In a motion for adoption, the Member representing Obubra 1 State Constituency and sponsor of the bill, Rt. Hon. Friday
Gabriel Okpechi said few objectives which outlined the criteria for the establishment of the Council, is among others to consider Cross Riverians who have created lots of impact in the development of the state and society, within and outside the shores of the state, to be recognised. Hon. Okpechi noted that if Cross Riverians are encouraged through
awards, it will increase productivity such as those in the Academic, Political and the Agricultural sector, as well as philanthropists. Also to be considered are those in traditional institutions who have maintained long-standing peace in their areas.
Further to the deliberations, the cosponsors to the bill and Members representing Akamkpa I State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Matthew Olory and the Deputy Leader of the House and Member for Ikom I, Rt. Hon. Fred Osim, maintained the bill’s intention to motivate hard work and excellence in the state, thus calling for the composition of the Council
to include men of proven integrity. Other contributors opined that the council, when established, should consider Cross Riverians that have also achieved in Sports, the Press, the business community, as well as members of civil
