100% Electrification: N8.5 billion Earmarked for 400 Communities …DG SEA Lauds Ayade’s Giant Strides in Sub-sector
The Director General, State Electrification Agency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Jake Otu Enyia has lauded the efforts of Governor Ben Ayade in the Electricity Sub-sector. Enyia who spoke during a familiarization visit by the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Ayodele Adegoke, highlighted some of what he described as “the modest achievements of Governor Ayade’s Administration in the Electricity Sub-Sector”. Among these are, procurement of 189 electricity distribution transformers at the cost of N650 million only, carried out a survey of status of electricity infrastructure in the 18 Local Government Areas of the State, maintained a data bank of the said facilities, and completed and commissioned some abandoned electrification projects across the State. Others include, direct intervention to more than 30 communities in provision of electricity materials worth N30 million, enhanced relationship and constant monitoring of activities of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) in Cross River State necessitating the radical improvement in power supply in the State. The DG added that procurement processes were on-going for the provision of electricity in more than 400 communities across the state at the cost of N8.5 billion, noting this was in line with the Cross River State Executive Council’s approval of 100% electricity coverage for the state.
Speaking earlier during the visit, the State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Ayodele Adegoke stated that the essence of the visit was to familiarize with relevant stakeholders in the State and also request for an electricity distribution transformer for the State NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp at Obubra which had been in darkness for decades. He appealed to the Director General to facilitate the provision of light at the orientation camp to give the corps members a sense of belonging and also stem criminal activities in the area. In a related development, the Assistant Commandant Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Cross River State Sector Command, Mr. Stanley Eboh also requested for a transformer at the agency’s new State Headquarters, pointing out that Governor Ben Ayade had been magnanimously relocated NSCDC from its former office at Anantigha, Calabar South to Calabar Municipality. Eboh used the opportunity to invite the SEA DG to the official commissioning of the new office. Teams of engineers from the State Electrification Agency will visit both the orientation camp and the NSCDC office to ascertain the capacity of transformer required and communicate same to the State Governor,
The DG had assured in separate responses during the respective visits. He charged NSCDC to continue to work assiduously to ensure that government’s assets and infrastructure across the State are protected while reiterating the State Governor’s commitment to ensure 100% electricity coverage for the State.
